“I am never running again!” Nine years ago, I decided to run a half marathon. I did it to challenge myself, get into better shape and lose some weight. Having never been a runner, I joined a running group which encouraged and trained me. I woke up every Sunday morning at 6 am to meet my group. I trained during the week in the park and at the gym. I was slow- but steady- and I dutifully followed all the training and showed up to the race. Unfortunately, the one thing that I learned from this challenge is that I realized that I hated running! I never got that”runner’s high”, my body was aching- but I was determined to finish the half marathon to prove to myself that I could accomplish this after 50. I finished the race, got my medal, felt it was anticlimactic and pretty much vowed to never run again.

So- why am I training to run the Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas this November? I’m running for something important. I am running to raise money for Chai Lifeline, a wonderful organization dedicated to helping very sick children and their families. I heard about this and I had to do something. However, I know I can’t do it alone. I need your help.

Chai Lifeline is a wonderful organization that provides year–round emotional, social, and financial support to more than 4,500 children and their families every year. Chai Lifeline´s programs and activities change their lives forever, returning joy and hope and enabling them to live full and happy lives despite the presence of illness. Its most famous program is Camp Simcha and its sister camp, Camp Simcha Special. Every year these two camps offer 450 kids a chance to forget about illness and just be kids again. To get a better idea of what Chai Lifeline does for families, please watch the videos below. I know they will touch your heart the way they touched mine.

Training is not easy, but neither is dealing with illness. If the children of Chai Lifeline can fight each day, if they can push themselves to go through hospital stays and treatments, I can do this for them. But I can't do this without your support. I need your help to raise as much money as possible for these kids.

So for this avowed non-runner, I have found my inspiration and purpose to complete another marathon. It has nothing to do with my journey to lose weight or exercise- it is totally inspired by the wonderful children, staff and volunteers of Chai Lifeline. So please, push the donate button and help me put smiles on the faces of sick children. Let's do this together! Let's make dreams come true.
