For my Bar Mitzvah, I have decided to take on my biggest challenge yet: running 13.1 miles in the Miami Half Marathon.

But this is about much more than finishing a race.

I am running in memory of my friend Sophie Spangenthal and raising $36,000 for Chai Lifeline, an organization that supported both Sophie’s family and mine during an incredibly difficult time.

Sophie faced cancer with amazing courage. Throughout her illness, Chai Lifeline was there for her and her family. They were also there for my family and me, helping us deal with the fear, sadness, and helplessness of watching someone we loved fight such a serious illness.

They could not change what was happening, but they made sure we did not have to go through it alone. That made a difference I will always remember.

Chai Lifeline gives that same support to children with serious illnesses and their families every day. They provide counseling, case management, meals, financial assistance, Camp Simcha, and many other programs. Sometimes their help solves an immediate problem. Other times, it simply reminds a family that people are standing beside them.

Training for a half marathon will not be easy. There will probably be mornings when I would rather stay in bed and miles when I want to stop. During those moments, I will think about Sophie’s strength and remember that every step has a purpose.

My goal is to raise $36,000 so Chai Lifeline can continue helping families like Sophie’s and mine.
