In January 2027, I will return to Miami to run the Miami Marathon with Chai Lifeline’s Team Sophie, honoring the memory of Sophie Spangenthal z”l.

I have run this marathon several times before, but this one feels especially meaningful.

The past year was a difficult one for me physically and mentally. A seemingly endless collection of injuries made running challenging and, at times, left my motivation at an all-time low. Missing the 2026 race was deeply disappointing.. not simply because I was unable to run, but because I felt that I had let down Team Sophie and the cause that means so much to me.

But setbacks do not have to be the end of the story.

I’m back!!

I’m determined and more motivated than ever to put my ever-growing collection of running shoes to the test (my wife still thinks I only have two). More importantly, I am ready to once again honor Sophie’s memory in the best way I know how: by taking on 26.2 miles and raising as much as possible for Chai Lifeline.

Sophie had a profound impact on my family. Her beautiful smile could light up a room, her energy was infectious, and the courage and strength she showed throughout her illness continue to inspire us. At Camp Simcha, Sophie found a place where illness did not define her - a place filled with friendship, laughter, adventure and joy, where she could simply be a child.

That is what Chai Lifeline provides to children and families confronting serious illness: moments of happiness during unimaginably difficult times, along with vital emotional, social and practical support throughout their journey. Through Camp Simcha and its many year-round programs, Chai Lifeline surrounds children, siblings and parents with compassion, community and the reassurance that they never have to face illness alone.

Training for and completing a marathon has never been easy. There will be sore muscles (and unattractive toe nails), very early mornings, inclement weather, and days when my knees and hamstrings question my life choices. But every difficult mile will remind me why I am running.

I am running for Sophie.

I am running for children who deserve the chance to laugh, play and experience joy despite the challenges they face.

And I am running for the families who rely on Chai Lifeline during some of the hardest moments of their lives.

Please consider supporting my journey by making a donation. Every contribution, of any amount, will help Chai Lifeline continue its extraordinary work and will carry me one step closer to the finish line.

Together, we can honor Sophie’s memory, bring strength and happiness to children facing illness, and help their families know that they are never alone.

Thank you for supporting Team Sophie, Chai Lifeline and my return to Miami.

26.2 miles. One unforgettable little girl. One incredibly important mission.
